Shawn Lu, a sixteen-year-old Moanalua High School junior, started playing golf at the age of three when his father first introduced him to the sport. Balancing golf, academics and music is difficult, but she thanks her teachers for doing a great job helping students outside of class. Her favorite school subject is Physics (honors). Besides golf, Aiko plays viola as a member of the elite Punahou Symphony Orchestra. What Aiko is most proud of is helping her high school golf team win the 2014 Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Championship. “I’ve met so many great people, and I would not have been given the chance to cherish them if not for the game of golf,” said Aiko. Golf has allowed her valuable opportunities to travel the world and develop new friendships. When she turned 11 years old, Aiko made the tough decision to quit soccer and focus on golf. She was also a competitive soccer player at the same time. Sixteen-year-old Punahou School junior Aiko Leong started golfing at the age 7 after her father’s friend enrolled her in her first junior golf program, Casey Nakama’s Golf Development Center. She recently signed a letter of intent to play golf for Brigham Young University. Her favorite school subject is science because “I can see the labs and problems come to life!” Rose is also fluent in Mandarin Chinese because she was born and lived in Beijing, China until she was 4 years old. “It is so much fun to practice because there are endless possibilities! Rose said about golf, “I could never get bored with this sport!” Rose won the 2014 King Auto Group Hawaii State Junior Championship and qualified for the 2014 U.S. She was also on the youth swim team and in the gymnastics program during the same time, but she needed a sport that could possibly afford her a college scholarship. Rose Huang, a seventeen-year-old senior from Iolani School, started golfing at the age of eight. Points are awarded for special achievements like Player of the Year honors.Īdditional sponsors for the event include skills sponsors Kraft Foods in Hawaii, Monarch Insurance community sponsor Aloha Section PGA and media sponsor KHON 2 FOX-TV. Points are calculated based on their performances. HSJGA golfers earn points at each competition sanctioned by the organization. Junior qualifying for the Challenge, is an annual, season-long points competition administered by the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association.
